Young Filipino math wizards triumphed in an international math competition in Vietnam, bagging a total of 41 individual awards.
The Philippine Team, composed of students from various schools, won big at the World Mathematics Invitational (WMI) held from July 14 to 18 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The group took home 10 gold medals, 19 silver, nine bronze, and three merit awards.
Jubilee Christian Academy’s Jerome Austin Te, 9, obtained a perfect score and was declared the grand champion at the Grade 3 level.
Lorenzo Franco Kasilag, Grade 4 student of Diliman Preparatory School, got a gold medal for his performance in the written part of the olympiad, and a bronze medal for his video presentation in the Mini-Math Creative category.
Maria Monica Manlises, Grade 8 student of St. Stephen’s High School, bagged silver medal and a merit award in the written part of the Research Project Regarding Math category.
Founded in 2013 in Taiwan, WMI is an international math contest that gathers students institutes and organizations worldwide “that make efforts in promoting and popularizing mathematics,” according to its website.
Over a thousand students from the Philippines, United States, China, Bulgaria, Iran, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Hongkong, Macau, Taiwan, and Vietnam participated in this year’s competition.
