Entrepreneurs in
Ormoc City, Leyte are taking advantage of the potentials offered by the technologies
brought by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). At least 19
applications for direct licensing agreements have been drafted when the DOST
Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI) had its Tech Transfer Day
(TTD) Visayas Region edition held in Ormoc City this month of September.
Edgar Garcia of TAPI said that the successful TTD event was
testimony not just to the quality of the DOST technologies and innovations
being offered for adoption, but also to the openness of Filipino entrepreneurs
to new products as well as the opportunities the technologies could bring.
“There were almost 60
inquiries for possible business collaborators,” Garcia said.
The successful TTD is
a good forecast with the oncoming TTD Mindanao leg to be held in Davao City
this November. The success of the TTD also spurred DOST regional directors to
hold TTDs on a smaller scale in their respective regions.
“Next year, we will
conduct a more expanded approach like per region or clustering approach,”
Garcia said.
The Visayas leg of
the TTD campaign was spearheaded by the DOST Region 8, led by director engineer
Edgar Esperancilla who partnered with the Ormoc City Chamber of Commerce
and Industry (OrCham), enabling the DOST to hold the TTD as one of the
pre-event activities during the 25th Visayas Area Business Conference.
The event featured
exhibits of 74 commercial-ready technologies in the Philippines, 11 of which
were presented by the researchers and technology innovators, including
carrageenan plant growth promoter, semen extender for goat, nipa sap sugar
production, and stabilized brown rice, to mention some.
The technology showcase was to boost local awareness and investment in science
and technology innovations. In addition, the DOST-Region VIII’s
multi-information kiosk/hub was formally launched on the same day.
The exhibits and trade fair were open to public and lasted for three days, from
September 14-16 at the Superdome.
