PH Inventor Wins with Touch Surface Interactive System

Dr. Nestor Michael Tiglao the inventor of the Smart Surface

Dr. Nestor Michael Tiglao, director of the Computer Center of the University of the Philippines – Diliman College of Engineering won the gold in the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva Switzerland.

The Smart Surface electronic sensor developed by Tiglao converts any surface into an interactive system. The gold award was only 1 of 20 awarded during the exposition.

The system converts any flat surface into a tap sensitive device akin to the touch surface of smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

The system enables students to have an innovative and interactive method of learning. The Smart Surface is a system that is composed of sensors and a central controller.

Tiglao’s research and development for the Smart Surface received funding support from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) line agencies Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development as well as the Technology Innovation for Commercialization (Technicom) program implemented by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute.

The Smart Surface System was part of a two-man team sent by the country to compete in the exhibition that had over 7,000 exhibits and have been participated in by 226 entries in the competition proper. It featured 1,000 inventions wherein the Smart System was given an award and recognition.
