Students from the Philippine Science High School – Western Visayas (PSHS – WV) campus took the plum in the poster presentation category at the recently held Kanagawa International Science Fair in Yokohama, Japan.

These were Justin Banusing, Cedrick Cruz and Peter Flores of PSHS – WV with their “Arijo”, an educational smartphone app. The Arijo app was included in the top 8 that was participated in by 78 groups from 34 different schools.

“We didn’t really come in with any expectations,”  “All we wanted to do was spread our advocacy of promoting STEM education and do the best for our school,” Banusing stated.

Developed over 1 year, the Arijo App was inspired by games such as Ingress and Pokemon Go. The app enables its users to learn science experiments, collate environmental data and then share it with others on a public repository.

Peter Flores said that “STEM is one of the most valued fields of studies out there, but not many people are getting into it.” “Since everyone is spending a lot of time on smartphones nowadays, we decided to reach out by putting science at their fingertips.“

The awardees are seniors in the PSHS – WV campus and will be pursuing STEM courses in college.

“I want to continue learning Computer Science and work in the industry one day,” related Cruz. “I also want to contribute to the STEM industry through Computer Science, which I hope to do throughout and after college.”
